It’s been said that it’s not what you say… but how you say it that counts…
… and over all, I’d tend to agree.
But I’m about to blow the whistle on something that a lot of the “alpha male” enthusiasts out their might have some problems with.
And here’s why.
Bottom line: Cooler people use “cooler” words and phrases in their everyday conversations with people.
Naturally, I’m not saying that you have to be UP on all of the new, hip words and phrases… in fact… depending on your age… that would definitely be detrimental (that means bad) to your success.
So, before I start eating crow… and you start scurrying for the back button… let’s get your feet wet into something called…
From Wikipedia:
Colloquialisms denote a manner of speaking or writing that is characteristic of familiar “common” conversation; informal colloquialisms can include words (such as “y’all” or “gonna” or “wanna”), phrases (such as “ain’t nothin’”, “dressed for bear” and “dead as a doornail”), or sometimes even an entire aphorism (“There’s more than one way to skin a cat”).
The thing that works well with this type of speech… is that it tends to resonate with the person that you’re talking to much more than pure “formal” English.
It’s a version of turning words into pictures in someone’s head… using metaphors… and informality.
Some examples of phrases and metaphors that rule:
Skating on thin ice
Out of the woodwork
On the house
The straw that breaks the camel’s back
Toast (as in, “Your ass is toast!”)
Too much on my plate
Abandon ship
Ace in the whole
Bite the bullet
Caught with your hand in the cookie jar
As you read through those examples, chew on the fact that this mode of speech gets your point across in the wink of an eye… much faster… and with more EFFECT than saying a formalized version.
Which one gets to the point faster and with more effect?
Sally might lose her job because of her history of tardiness…
-or-
Sally’s really skating on thin ice because of her tardiness…
-or even-
Talk about someone skating on thin ice… Sally needs to work on getting to work.
But, we can take this even further for ourselves.
You see, a lot of the people that I know that are great communicators have a powerful way with metaphors… so much that they create THEIR OWN…
So they aren’t using the typical ones. They’re using one’s that you likely have never really heard of.
One that I use… is the “went 0 to 60″.
Remember, effective speech gets people to DO things based on the EMOTIONAL response that you’re triggering when you’re interacting with someone.
More tomorrow.
